A More Significant Leader

Updated: Aug 10, 2022

How do we make God’s day?

John 15:8, “My Father is glorified by this: That you produce much fruit and prove to be my disciples.”

How do we “produce much fruit”?

John 15:5, “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”

How do we “prove to be my disciples”?

John 13:35, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

How do we love “one another”?

John 15:13, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

As we lean into the role of influencing and leading the people in our groups, in essence we are embracing the call to fight for their highest good as a follower of Jesus. To be someone who sees who they can become and calls them up into that potential.

What gives us the right to “call up” anyone in the faith?

John 13:3-5, “Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything…So he got up from the table…poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet…” (edited for emphasis)

We get to engage the spiritual journey of those in our groups, because we follow the model of servanthood we received from Jesus. I equate this passage with the idea of being back in high school and having a test in our best subject and knowing the content “up one side and down the next.” Ever been there? You were so confident you felt empowered to lean over and help the student next to you study and prepare. You weren’t worried one bit and with that confidence, and without any hesitation, you wanted to serve.

We can tap into that same confidence not because we have all of the answers. We can influence and fight for others because we are willing to serve and want to see lives transformed by the Gospel. And maybe, selfishly, we want a front-row seat to what God can do in the lives of those we lead. I know for a fact that some of the folks we are serving are different people today than they were a few months ago.

And guess what???

When that happens, it makes God’s day!
